Abstract 20539: Difference of Energy Expenditure While Standing versus Sitting: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Introduction: Replacing sitting with standing is one of several recommendations giving to people to decrease sedentary time, but the EE difference of standing vs. sitting has been controversial. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the difference in EE between standing and sitting.
Methods: We searched for studies that compared the EE of standing vs. sitting using MEDLINE, Embase Scopus, TRIP Database, Web of Science, google scholar and CINAHL since inception up to April 11, 2017, without language and year of publication restriction. We included randomized trials and observational studies that measured the difference in EE between standing motionless and sitting among non-pregnant and non-lactating adults. We pooled the weighted mean differences and calculated 95% confidence intervals using a random effect model.
Results: We identified 666 potential studies and included in the final analysis 44 studies that met inclusion criteria with 1,141 participants (Figure). The mean difference in EE between sitting and standing was 0.15kcal/min (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.12-0.17). The difference in EE among women was 0.1 kcal/min (95% CI 0.0-0.21), while the difference among men was 0.19 kcal/min (95% CI 0.05-0.33). By substituting sitting with standing for 6 hours per day, a person weighing 70 kg will expend additional 54 kcal per day. Assuming no increase in energy intake and reliability of EE measurements, this difference in EE would translate in the caloric content of about 2.5 kg of body fat in 1 year.
Conclusions: Substitution of sitting with standing is a potential solution for a sedentary lifestyle to prevent weight gain in the long term. Future studies should assess the effectiveness, acceptability, feasibility and long-term safety of replacing sitting with standing for this purpose. Figure.
