Abstract 15869: Egg Consumption and Risk of Coronary Heart Disease in the Million Veteran Program
Introduction: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the US. It remains unclear whether dietary cholesterol affects blood cholesterol, and the latter is associated with CHD. Eggs are a major source of dietary cholesterol and available data from studies examining the association between egg consumption and CHD are limited and inconsistent. Previous research has not examined the relationship between egg consumption and CHD among US Veterans.
Hypothesis: To examine the association between egg consumption and CHD incidence among US Veterans.
Methods: The Million Veteran Program (MVP) is a national, representative and longitudinal study of Veterans for genomic and non-genomic research that combines data from self-reported surveys, electronic health records, and biospecimens. Of the 571,608 Veterans enrolled in MVP as of June 2017, a subsample completed a dietary survey at enrollment. We had complete information on egg consumption and covariates for 148,559 participants at baseline. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios for incident CHD risk.
Results: The mean age was 63.9 ± 11.9 years, 90.6% were male, 79.1% were white, and 10.5% were black. During an average follow-up time of 2.65 years, 4,139 new CHD events occurred. Infrequent egg consumption was not associated with a higher risk of CHD, but frequent egg consumption was associated with an elevated risk of CHD. In a Cox regression adjusting for age, gender, race, smoking, alcohol use, DASH score, exercise, and education, hazard ratios (95% CI) for CHD were 1.0 (referent), 1.06 (0.91,1.23), 1.05 (0.90,1.21), 1.12 (0.97,1.29), 1.26 (1.08,1.48), 1.16 (0.97,1.38), and 1.27 (1.03,1.55) for the egg consumption of <1/month, 1-3/month, 1/week, 2-4/week, 5-6/week, 1/day, and 2+/day, respectively (P for trend = 0.006).
Conclusions: In this cohort of US Veterans, frequent but not infrequent egg consumption was associated with a higher CHD incidence.
