We read with great interest the paper by Bernard et al1 recently published in Circulation. The authors conducted a multicenter, randomized controlled trial to demonstrate the neuroprotective effect of induction of therapeutic hypothermia during out-of-hospital cardiac arrest using a rapid infusion of cold saline. However, therapeutic hypothermia failed to improve outcomes at hospital discharge but decreased the rate of return of spontaneous circulation in adults with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
