Abstract 15604: Triglyceride-rich Lipoproteins Linked to Migraine in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)
Background and Purpose: Migraine headache has previously been associated with dyslipidemia. However, no epidemiological study has investigated the association of migraine with an advanced blood lipoprotein panel.
Hypothesis: to verify if there is a possible association between lipid and lipoprotein subfractions and migraine according to aura symptoms in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil).
Methods: 1,595 men and 1,560 women without CVD underwent a clinical assessment at baseline. Total-cholesterol and its sub-fractions (real, dense and low density LDL-C fractions, total VLDL-C, VLDL-3-C; non-HDL-C, total-HDL-C, HDL-2-C and HDL-3-C); and the one contained in triglycerides lipoprotein-remnants [TRL-C (VLDL 1+2-C VLDL3-C+ IDL-C)] were determined by vertical auto profiling (VAP). Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were obtained from the associations between lipid fractions and migraine using multinomial regression models.
Results: For the overall sample, we found positive associations between the highest tertiles of VLDL-C, VLDL-3-C, TRL-C and triglycerides with migraine without aura [OR, 1.51 (95%CI, 1.05-2.18); OR, 1.61 (95%CI, 1.13-2.29); OR, 1.55 (95%CI, 1.06-2.26) and OR, 1.49 (95%CI; 1.04-2.17)], respectively. Stratified by sex, we confirmed positive associations between migraine without aura and the highest tertiles of VLDL-C (OR, 1.61; 95%CI, 1.07-2.40) and TRL-C (OR, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.03-2.34) among women. In men, the highest tertile of VLDL-3-C (OR, 3.87; 95%CI, 1.23-12.19) was positively associated with migraine without aura.
Conclusions: In this sample of middle-aged participants from ELSA-Brasil, associations of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and their remnants were more commonly found in migraineurs, particularly among those without aura symptoms.
