Response to Letter Regarding Article, “Nationwide Cohort Study of Risk of Ischemic Heart Disease in Patients With Celiac Disease”
We would like to thank Drs Lagro, Duijts, and Jaddoe for their interest in our article.1 In this study, the hazard ratio for ischemic heart disease in patients with celiac disease increased when we adjusted for smoking, body mass index, and nationality in a subset of patients with available data (pregnant women). The prevalence of smoking was 18.1% in women with celiac disease and 20.8% in age-matched reference women. We agree with Lagro et al that further studies into potential mechanisms underlying the association between celiac disease and ischemic heart disease are needed.
