Response to Letter Regarding Article, “Careers in Cardiovascular Outcomes Research”
We very much appreciate the interest expressed by Small in our article and in the area of outcomes research training. As mentioned in the article, our goal was to provide a sample of formal training programs in outcomes research rather than a comprehensive list of such training opportunities. We also acknowledged in our article that many successful investigators in the fields of outcomes and health services research receive superb training at their local institutions through well-established programs such as career development awards funded through the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Health Administration, American Heart Association, and others.
We fully agree that the Veteran Affairs’ Health Services Research and Development Service’s 5-year Career Development Award is an excellent program for early-stage investigators in the field of outcomes research. In fact, this was the program through which one of the authors (J.A.S.) received his training. We would like to thank Small for highlighting this remarkable training opportunity and for providing the Web address at which interested individuals can find additional information.
Dr Kosiborod has served as the fellowship program director and Dr Spertus has served as the director of the American Heart Association PRT Outcomes Research Center at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute.
