ACC/AHA Clinical Competence Statement on Electrocardiography and Ambulatory Electrocardiography. This competence statement is one in a series developed by the ACC and AHA to assist in the assessment of physicians’ competence on a procedure-specific basis. The minimum education, training, experiences, and cognitive and technical skills necessary for the competent reading and interpretation of electrocardiograms (ECGs) and ambulatory electrocardiograms (AECGs) are specified. Product code 71-0217.
ACC/AHA Guidelines: Update on Perioperative Cardiac Evaluation for Noncardiac Surgery. Perioperative cardiac assessment is one of the best and most cost-effective ways to reduce risk—and now cardiologists have an updated tool to help with the job. The “ACC/AHA Guidelines for Perioperative Cardiovascular Evaluation for Noncardiac Surgery” have been extensively revised since their creation in 1996. They now reflect a wealth of new evidence on how best to evaluate and manage cardiac patients immediately before and after surgery. Product code 71-0220.
AHA Scientific Statement: Unique Features of Infective Endocarditis in Childhood. This paper covers the topic of infective endocarditis in children. It discusses the epidemiology and clinical findings, pathophysiology, diagnostic tools, laboratory findings (including echocardiography and blood cultures), antimicrobial treatment, and prevention of this disease. Product code 71-0223.
AHA Scientific Statement: Secondary Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease in the Elderly. As the US population ages, prevalence of CHD in the elderly increases. Clinical manifestations in older patients represent the effects of the disease superimposed on the physiological effects of aging. This publication focuses on secondary prevention interventions to impact and control risk factors in older patients with CHD, including smoking, hypertension, abnormal blood lipids, elevated blood glucose, obesity, various psychological concerns, and physical inactivity. A description of CHD in the elderly is also included. Product code 71-0224.
AHA Scientific Statement: Prevention Conference VI: Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease. A report on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease based on working group discussions and preceding presentations at Prevention VI Conference. It constitutes a review of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes, including epidemiology, pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, risk assessment in diabetics, lifestyle and medical management of risk factors, management of cardiovascular-renal complications, and revascularization in diabetic patients. Product code 77-0225.
AHA Scientific Statement: Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease. This guide is intended to assist primary-care providers in their assessment, management, and follow-up of patients who may be at risk for, but who have not yet manifested, cardiovascular disease. The continuing message is that adoption of healthy life habits remains the cornerstone of primary prevention, including the avoidance of tobacco, healthy dietary patterns, weight control, and regular, appropriate exercise. The healthcare professional should create an environment supportive of risk-factor change, including long-term reinforcement of adherence to lifestyle and drug interventions. Product code 71-0226.
AHA Scientific Statement: Dietary Sugar and Cardiovascular Disease. The report contains a review of the impact of dietary sugar on health, with emphasis on cardiovascular disease and its risk factors. It provides a rationale for limiting sugar intake. Product code 71-0230.
AHA Scientific Statement: Reporting of Renal Artery Revascularization. Although the treatment of atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis using percutaneous intravascular stents has gained widespread utility, there exist few prospective randomized controlled trials to support the regulatory approval of these devices. To facilitate this process and to help answer many important questions regarding the appropriate application of renal artery stents, well-designed and rigorously conducted trials are needed. These trials must have clearly defined goals and must be sufficiently sized and performed so as to withstand intensive outcomes assessment. Toward this end, this document provides guidelines and definitions for the design, conduct, evaluation, and reporting of renal artery stent randomized controlled trials. In addition, areas of critically necessary renal artery stent investigation are identified. It is hoped that this information will be valuable to the investigator wishing to conduct research in this important area. Product code 71-0235.
