Winston Churchill pointed out that "[t]he farther backward you can look, the farther forward you can see." Unfortunately, cardiovascular physicians and scientists all too frequently tend to have limited facility with key events in the history of our discipline. In an attempt to overcome this limitation, in this issue of Circulation we begin a new series on historical perspectives in cardiology with the publication of the article, "The Swan-Ganz Catheters: Past, Present, and Future," by Dr Kanu Chatterjee. This series will include historical overviews of key topics (eg, procedures, devices, and novel concepts) that helped shape the field of contemporary cardiology. Each topic will be presented in historical context and will be developed to the present era from that perspective. We trust that the readers of Circulation will find this new series interesting and enlightening.
