Special Anniversary Issue

Introduction to 50th Anniversary Celebration Issue for Circulation

James T. Willerson, MD, Editor-in-Chief, Circulation

Paul W. Armstrong, MD, Section Editor, Clinical Cardiology: New Frontiers

Fiftieth anniversaries are extraordinary occasions, and in this special issue, we celebrate a golden moment in Circulation’s history, thereby marking a half century of progress in the war against cardiovascular disease. Much has occurred during this time, and to assist us, we have recruited an outstanding international array of contributors to review selected accomplishments that have provided enhanced care and improved the lifestyles of large numbers of patients with cardiovascular disease.

The contributors have been asked to assess the major developments in our knowledge since 1950, with an emphasis on those that possess enduring value and alter the way we think and practice. In addition, we have attempted to identify pathways for future research that will further advance our progress.

We hope the readers agree that this volume not only honors Circulation’s past contributors but also provides a glimpse of an exciting and promising future. Circulation and the American Heart Association, with the collaboration of their widening international array of contributors and readers, are committed to being major contributors to that future.
