The theoretical basis for the use of the systolic time intervals has been
largely established. The method has been validated by direct measures from
within the circulatory system. Standards for equipment and technique have
been defined. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the value of this
quantitative noninvasive technique for assessing left ventricular
performance. At present there is need for further studies of the clinical
usefulness of the systolic time intervals to improve both diagnosis and
therapy of various cardiovascular disorders.
